Mary Liddell
My artistic journey is an exploration in colour and tone; a consideration of the effects of light on flowers, familiar objects (teacups, jugs etc) in still lifes and garden pictures, the detailed scrutiny of plants and flowers closely examined, and the painterly response to shifting light of skies and seas in landscapes. I frequently like to work "En Plein Air" in the landscape.
My "fantasy" paintings also contain these elements but are created from imagination using abstracted compositions, they have a narrative element which is directed by the compositional needs of the painting using images coming straight out of the subconscious, perhaps more akin to the "wonderland" of my great great aunt, Alice Liddell, the original Alice in Wonderland.
I see my painting as a journey of discovery, I am never quite sure what will happen next, It's a long fall down the rabbit hole, and it’s very exciting!"
I Trained at The Chelsea School of Art and the Central School of Art in the early 1980s under the tutelage of the visionary and surrealist painter Cecil Collins. I have exhibited widely in the UK and New Zealand where I lived from 2008-2013, and have work in private collections in the UK, USA, France Italy Switzerland Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia.
Most recently I have exhibited at 44AD Art Space gallery in Bath, the Victoria Art Gallery (Bath Society of Artists open) 2021,2022,2023) , Chelsea Arts Club mixed show Summer 2022, Chelsea Society of Arts exhibition, and paintings can be seen at Nadia Waterfield Fine Art in Hampshire. I participate in the Chew Valley Arts trail. I grew up on a farm in Southern England and now live and paint near Bath in the beautiful Chew Valley, and I think this is what has imbued me with a strong connection to nature, the Earth and the landscape.
