tom symonds
Tom Symonds, born in 1980 in Bath, United Kingdom, is a contemporary painter based in Bristol. Tom is best known for his large-scale paintings executed in oil paint. His most recognisable works are characterised by their large semi-abstracted depictions of animals and figures set against gold backgrounds.
Tom explores themes of personal mythology and symbolism within his work, drawing inspiration from Japanese Screens, Traditional Chinese Painting and Myths from around the world. This is used to examine and give form to thoughts and concepts that are challenging to express within language. Tom's artistic practice is deeply process-driven, exploring how early choices decide the development of a work of art. He employs a distinctive approach in his paintings, incorporating gold leaf, charcoal and oil as prominent mediums which, through their interplay, contrasts washed-out, distressed marks with vibrant, carefully applied paint.
Tom Symonds' work has been featured in several notable exhibitions, including David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year in 2024 at Mall Galleries, London. Calm in Chaos in 2024 at Brick Lane Gallery, London. Olympians in 2024 at La Citadel, Dover. In 2014, his work was exhibited at "Antlers - From Fairy Tales to the Spirit World" in South Hamilton, MA, United States. Tom’s works have found their place in numerous private collections, nationally and internationally. Tom previously obtained a degree in Fine Art from Falmouth University.
